Raised in Detroit and based in San Francisco, Barclay Crenshaw created the quirky alias “Claude VonStroke” in 2005 and went on to become one of the most well respected label owners and DJs in dance music. His label, dirtybird, continues to surprise and innovate in the underground dance scene. Claude VonStroke sits at the forefront of all that is good, proper and most importantly fun.

Hi Claude, how’s the tour been so far?

Super good besides my stinky laundry its all aces.

Where have you travelled since releasing the album and how long have you been touring it?

I have been going forever it seems, Australia, Brazil, South Africa, 28 dates in North America & now Europe!

Are there any places in particular that you look forward to playing, from previous experience or otherwise?

I guess its more of seeing people I like on the road that I look forward to. I’ve met so many cool people over the years traveling all around it’s nice to see them when I’m traveling.

How do you feel that US & UK crowds differ in relation to the reception of your sets?

I stopped really changing what I play, I tend to hope that dirtybird has reached a place where the fans know what we do and I can express myself the way I want to. I think there is a misconception that USA fans don’t “get it” but they absolutely do, they are really on point just like in Europe. The world is changing fast.

What’s the reaction been like to the album?

So far its been good. Its hard to tell what the reaction is really overall. Lots of people say they love it, some say they hate it. There are 100s and 100s of media outlets on the internet so who knows. I’m happy with it which is all that really matters i suppose.

Where did the inspiration for the album’s title come from?

I had a lot of “real” jobs before I was a professional music producer. I know what its like to sit at work and wait for the weekend if you live in the city. It’s not like you go camping every weekend. For most people the release comes at a nightclub or a bar, dancing and getting messy. The animalistic side of everyone is coming out in these urban environments. Thats is the inspiration for the album title.

You’re touring with J.Phlip, for those who may be new to her, how would you describe her as an artist and DJ?

She plays tougher than me but also a bit deeper. It’s the perfect lead-in to what I play. I think she is set to have an incredible year and that eventually she will become one of the names people talk about in the DJ circuit. I hope that people can see her talent, that is why I brought her on this tour.

What can we expect from your set at The Tuesday Club next week?

It will be me showcasing tracks and remixes from the album plus a ton more new dirtybird music and just general good fun!!

We’ve seen huge underground and commercial success from the likes of Breach, Justin Martin, Dusky and Eats Everything over the last year – are there any new artists on the Dirty Bird roster that the Tuesday Club attendees should keep their eyes out for this year?

Killfrenzy has the hot hand right now I think but I am always looking out for new music. That is my job. I actually can’t predict which one of our artists will break loose at any specific time but I think that every 18mo or so I’ve proven that dirtybird can bring up someone special. Even if they don’t really hang around for very long like Bashmore and Riva Starr for example, I am still always pushing to uncover new talent and bring new artists and new music into the business.

Finally, (one from TTC street team here) If you had to pick one brand of percolator to make coffee with for the rest of your life, what would you pick?
